Remembrance Week - The Big Lottery Fund - Heroes Return 2
9th November, 2012
The Big Lottery Fund has extended its Heroes Return 2 programme. The programme has no fixed deadline for applications. This will ensure Second World War veterans from the UK, Channel Islands and Republic of Ireland who have yet to take advantage of the funding opportunity since the programme opened in 2009, now have more time to apply for grants to cover travel and accommodation expenses to enable them to make trips back to places across the world where they served. They can also receive funding to take part in commemorative trips in the UK. For details contact - Heroes Return helpline:
0845 00 00 121 or visit www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/heroesreturn
To date The Big Lottery Fund has awarded more than £25 million to over 51,000 Second World War veterans, their spouses, widows and carers.
Remembrance Week; BBC1 (2010 - )
The Cenotaph (literally meaning Empty Tomb) in Whitehall has played host to the Remembrance Service for the past nine decades. Every year on the Sunday nearest to 11 November, thousands of people march past the Cenotaph to pay respect to those who gave their lives defending others from the First World War right through to today.
In the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday, BBC Daytime celebrates stories of courage and sacrifice made by thousands of people from the UK during times of war.
It's not just stories of the Army, Navy and RAF, everyone from war veterans, active service men and women to wartime nurses, teachers, civilians and even the former entertainers of the troops. Stories from the frontline through to the front room form the heart of this new BBC Daytime series, Remembrance Week.
